It's not the usual CGI-packed action film that typically comes out of Hollywood. "Polite Society" is refreshingly original. Every actor in this film deserves an award. Treading between the realistic to the theatrical, the words leap from the actors’ mouths with full authenticity. Who knew that we needed a swirling sari-filled fight? The best visual moment in the whole movie is the fight scene between Ria and Mama Nawaz at the wedding that is just gorgeous and hilarious. Director Manzoor took every opportunity to put in a high kick or a flip, and the movie is all the better for it. After all, Ria wants to be a stunt woman, so we have to see her skills. The best parts of the film are the over-the-top stunts, and the fight scenes. So Ria sets off to “rescue” Lena from a terrible fate: being married to a rich guy. Salim and Lena begin dating and eventually get engaged. She really leans into the mother who knows best role. Nim, who plays Salim’s mother, is brilliant, and one of the best characters in the film. But Salim is a mama’s boy through and through. Salim's mother, Raheela (Nimra Bucha), is every bit the doting and overbearing type. Salim is a doctor who “helps babies.” It’s purposefully vague. Oh, and let’s not forget the rebellious high school girl who wants to be a stunt woman, and her older sister, the washed-out college student who couldn’t crack art school. In the movie “ Polite Society,” you have a very Jane Austen motif of a lower-class family with daughters and a higher-society family with the sought-after prince of the community. One must be dutiful to family and an upstanding citizen. In a polite society, you have strict rules on behavior, social customs and on what are allowable aspirations.
